After graduating with a First Class LLB at Strathclyde University in June 2024, I was excited to have secured a Paralegal position within the Road Traffic Accident Litigation Team at Jackson Boyd. This role provided an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience in drafting court actions for personal injury claims arising from road traffic accidents. In September 2024, I returned to Strathclyde University to undertake the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. I had thoroughly enjoyed working full-time over the summer and looked forward to applying the skills I developed with Jackson Boyd to my studies.
In January 2024, I began undertaking the work-based learning course in a legal environment elective. This involved spending an additional four hours per week at the office within the RTA team to complete weekly tasks. During my placement I undertook a variety of tasks such as carrying out legal research, preparing court bundles, and assisting with court preparation in advance of hearings. My 10-week placement allowed me to continue building upon my skills in communication, teamworking, and time-management to complete the allocated tasks within the required timescales each week.
The most beneficial element of undertaking the elective was that it allowed me to broaden my knowledge and undertake tasks that gave me an insight into the work of a trainee solicitor. The placement required me to undertake new tasks I had not come across before so I could develop my own professional skills and knowledge. For example, by drafting a joint minute I was able to expand my understanding of the procedural steps which are required to be followed where a case settles before a final hearing.
My work-based journey has been equally challenging as it has been rewarding. By actively assisting more senior members of the firm with their ongoing cases, I was able to review files which explored more complex RTA disputes. These files contained several reports detailing the complexities of our client’s injuries. By having the opportunity to assist solicitors in preparing cases for proof I was able to practice file management to ensure all relevant documents, such as expert reports and witness statements, were all readily available. I also considered what witnesses were required to prove our client’s claim.
My work-based learning journey has not only enhanced my skills in legal research, drafting a variety of legal documents, and deciphering complex reports, it has also complimented my role as a Paralegal by allowing me to improve the quality of the Initial Writs and Summons I draft. I can better interpret the contents of the export reports relied upon in support of our clients heads of claims. I was also able to attend a workplace training seminar on the compulsory pre-action protocol delivered by one of the Partners which was vital for my professional development as a Paralegal.
