As a sixth-year student at high school, I am driven by my passion for law. I aspire to eventually qualify and work as a lawyer, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to do my work experience here at Jackson Boyd.
My time at Jackson Boyd has been eye opening. I enjoyed rotating around the different departments gaining valuable experience of what it would be like to work within a busy law firm.
In the Road Traffic Accident department, I was given a taste of what it is like to organise and produce court documents and was shown examples of simple procedure, summary cause and ordinary action court papers. As well as being shown examples of these documents, I was shown the process of submitting them to the court.
After this I went to the Dispute Resolution department where I was shown examples of affidavits which allowed me to see what they must include and how they should be laid out. I was given the opportunity to sit in on a meeting with a client, which gave me an insight into how clients are professionally managed.
From there, I went over to the Employer’s and Public Liability department where I was shown how a claim for solatium (injury) is valued using the Judicial Collage Guidelines. I was also shown examples of extra costs that can be added to a claim. This was everything ranging from inconvenience to future medical expenses.
Lastly, I spent time within the Employment Law department where I was given some insight into how employment tribunals work. I was also able to sit in on another client meeting which gave me an opportunity to see employment law in action.
Throughout my experience it became clear that Jackson Boyd always try to keep their clients at the forefront of what they are doing. I hope to one day apply what I have learned to dealing with my own clients, as a lawyer.
To conclude, I found this experience extremely beneficial. I was given valuable experience in working within a law firm, which has given me an even greater desire to pursue a career in the legal sector. I can’t thank everyone enough for being so approachable and happy to show me what they do within their role at the firm, and also for their willingness to answer any questions I had.
