Recently, we had the pleasure of being invited to Lornshill Academy’s Parental Careers Event on 13 November 2024. The aim of the event was for us to engage with young people about pathways into the legal sector and our role and responsibilities.
I attend this school many years ago and was delighted to return to represent our firm on the day.
During the event I spoke to a variety of pupils from second year to sixth year about the various pathways into law, and my own journey through university and becoming qualified at Jackson Boyd.
I spoke to pupils about how law is more than just working hard and studying lots, it covers every aspect of life. I was able to give examples from different areas of law such as corporate, intellectual property, conveyancing, private client, criminal, and litigation.
I also explained how law is more than just being a solicitor, there are various other professions in law such as being a paralegal, advocate, or academic.
Looking to my own role at Jackson Boyd, I spoke about my daily life and how every day is different in the world of litigation, it is exciting and face paced.
For a practical task, pupils were asked to engage in groups about Jaffa Cakes, are they a biscuit or a cake? I heard arguments from pupils about how they are in the biscuit aisle in the supermarket but have the soft spongey texture before ultimately telling them of the infamous judgement, they are a cake! I explained how this was a major case some years ago, which surprised many pupils and showed how even the smallest detail can actually become a legal argument!
Finally, we discussed that whilst the pupils might not be thinking about law right now, a lot of solicitors decide to do law after some experience working in it, like our very own Angela Wilson (From budding apprentice to trainee lawyer: My Journey – Jackson Boyd).
Careers in law are diverse and have a lot to offer – it is just a matter of finding the area that is right for you!
