As we approach the winter months, as well as preparing for Christmas, we also need to prepare our vehicles for the change in weather conditions.
Snow, ice and/or sleet can make the roads dangerous. Stopping distances can increase up to 10 times longer when ice is present on the roads. Stopping distances play a very important role during safe winter driving. Drivers should always adjust their speed when driving on ice and snow.
Preparation for your journey is key before setting off. Here are some tips to help you make sure you are prepared for your journey during these colder months:
- Allow yourself extra time for winter journeys.
- Try to make use of major roads, which are more likely to be cleared and gritted.
- Try to wake up a little earlier in the mornings to give you plenty of time to de-ice your vehicle.
- Wear comfortable and dry shoes to avoid having your feet slip on the pedals.
- Check your fuel levels before you set off on your journey – try to ensure that you have at least a quarter of a tank in the event of any unexpected delays/issues.
- Clear all windows using a scraper and de-icer and wait all windows are fully demisted before commencing your journey.
- If you drive an automatic vehicle, check your vehicle handbook as some vehicles are equipped with a winter mode.
Tyre Safety
Another factor to be considered during the winter months is if there is a requirement for winter tyres to be fitted on to your vehicle. Although it is not a legal requirement, they definitely have their benefits as they are designed to improve traction in low temperatures and on slippery surfaces which in turn, can create shorter stopping distances and support safe winter driving.
Some tyre safety tips are as follows:
- Your tyres should have at least 3mm of tread for the winter;
- Don’t believe the myth that letting air out of your tyres gives them more grip. This is untrue and is not safe.
- Maybe consider having all-season tyres fitted. All-season tyres are made from a special rubber that provides better grip during cold and wet conditions.
