Work-Based Learning at Jackson Boyd
Alongside my current role as a Paralegal in the RTA Litigation team, I am currently studying the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde. As part of my course, I recently had the opportunity to take part in a ten-week Work-Based Learning (WBL) placement at Jackson Boyd.
Gaining Practical Experience
In my role as a paralegal I am regularly tasked with reviewing files and drafting court documents to commence proceedings. Through the WBL course, I had the chance to gain experience in areas beyond my usual responsibilities. This included drafting letters to clients and medical experts, researching case law, assisting with court preparation, and even appearing at a mock Case Management Discussion at “Jackson Boyd Sheriff Court.”
Skills Developed
Over the ten weeks, I developed a variety of skills, including drafting, advocacy, and client communication, while gaining a clearer understanding of the process of a personal injury claim from start to finish. This experience has not only enhanced my skills as a paralegal but has also supported my academic studies – for example, in my Advanced Civil Advocacy module and personal injury project, the practical experience I gained during the WBL placement helped me perform to a higher standard.
I am extremely grateful to Jackson Boyd for this opportunity, and in particular to my supervisor, Jennifer Rowlinson, for providing a wide range of tasks and detailed feedback. Her guidance has helped me recognise both my strengths and areas for further development, supporting my ongoing growth in these areas.
